The Indianapolis 500 is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a 2.5-mile oval circuit that is also the largest sports venue in the world. It is the most prestigious race in IndyCar and 33 drivers take part in it, divided into 11 rows on the starting grid. To complete the 500 miles, they drive for 200 laps in a counterclockwise direction.

The four corners of the oval have a camber of 9°12', considerably less than the Brooklands, Monza and Daytona ovals, and a length of 0.25 miles (402 meters). The main and opposite straights each measure 0.625 miles (1,006 meters) and the side straights 0.125 miles (201 meters), totaling 2.5 miles (4,024 meters). The mixed circuit has a variant without chicane on turn 1 of the oval and another with chicane, which measure 4,192 and 4,218 meters respectively.

The reigning champion of the category is Australian driver Will Power, who in 2022 won only one race but remained among the top four in 12 of 17 rounds.
