Hyatt, Rosewood, Intercontinental, Jumeirah 4 best new hotels in Guangzhou and Shenzhen for a Lu

May 2024 · 3 minute read

In recent years, the biggest pipeline of new hotels scheduled to open has been concentrated in the Asia-Pacific – and the majority of that pipeline is in China. With approximately 400,000 rooms under planning or construction, Shanghai is leading the charge, but Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area are not far behind. Originally scheduled to open in 2019, travellers will have to wait just a bit longer for the new Conrad in Shenzhen and the 2,000-room Grand Lisboa Palace — designed by Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace — on the Cotai Strip in Macau, and the high profile Londoner Macao by Sands.

Here, we elect the most exciting newly opened properties in the Greater Bay Area to ring in Chinese New Year 2020 with a luxury getaway.

Jumeirah Hotel Guangzhou

On the heels of its luxury private residences Jumeirah Living Guangzhou, in Zhujiang New Town, comes the Jumeirah Hotel Guangzhou, projected to be throwing open its doors in Tianhe District any day now. The hotel’s impeccable design combines classic luxury, Chinese heritage, luxury materials and Jumeirah’s renowned service. Comprehensive fitness and wellness facilities are complemented by creatively designed guest rooms that range from loft-style suites to duplexes recalling the refinement of the Tang Dynasty, as well as an impressive array of F&B, including Chinese, Japanese and French dining, a whisky bar and the Bar on Six, boasting a terrace that looks out over the city.

InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Centre

Located next to one of China and Asia’s busiest and most important convention centres, the Canton Fair Complex, the recently unveiled InterContinental Guangzhou Exhibition Centre boasts 350 luxury rooms just a few steps away in a striking silver tower. Taking its design inspiration from Guangzhou’s heritage as the start of the Maritime Silk Road, the location is perfect for fair-goers looking to unwind after a trade show at the spa, as well as leisure travellers keen to explore colonial-era Shamian Island and its European architecture, the Lingnan culture of Lychee Bay, Port of Huangpu, Pazhou Pagoda, or sample the Guangzhou Restaurant, serving up dim sum since 1935.

Rosewood Guangzhou

Much has been written on Rosewood’s landmark property in Hong Kong, meanwhile in Guangzhou, it unveiled a new property in September, which marks the tallest five-star hotel in the world. It inherited the brand’s distinct DNA of old world-meets-contemporary luxury. Situated in cosmopolitan Tianhe, on the top 39 storeys of CTF Finance Centre’s 108 floors — a mansion in the sky — the views of the GBA from the hotel’s 251 rooms and suites are unparalleled. It seamlessly marries art, architecture, design and natural beauty. The indelible impressions start with the five-metre lobby and carry on to the rich, bronze-accented Yabu Pushelberg interiors, the nearly airborne terraces and gardens, innovative art scattered across the hotel and some of the most exciting new dining destinations in a city renowned for its food culture.

Park Hyatt Shenzhen

Opened in September, the Park Hyatt Shenzhen represents the American hotelier’s fresh expansion into China — the first in a new wave cresting soon (next up, Andaz Shenzhen Bay). With 195 rooms spanning 48 storeys, the Park Hyatt is walking distance from the Shenzhen Convention & Exhibition Center and in the heart of the city’s business and luxury shopping districts. Just three kilometres from Futian, the hotel is connected to the metro and high-speed rail trains to Hong Kong. Architects Kohn Pedersen Fox’s steel butterfly design gives the Shenzhen skyline a new silhouette, and once again Yabu Pushelberg tap bottomless design imaginations with elegant neutral tones and delicate local design motifs — like lantern style pendant lights and classic Chinese cabinetry accenting the contemporary homey vibes.
