Australia's Geelong Grammar School (GGS) aims to produce young leaders with a strong commitment to international understanding, social responsibility and service.

Set up in 1855, GGS is one of the best known and largest co-educational boarding schools in the world.

Head of admission Simon Leslie says the school has 1,700 students on its four campuses near Melbourne, Australia. Twenty of them are from Hong Kong.

The most noted campus is Corio, near Geelong, where 760 girls and boys form 25 countries enjoy the living and learning experience that GGS is renowned for.

'The school also has a commitment to conservation and the enhancement of the environment and the betterment of humanity,' Mr Leslie said.

With a reputation for innovation, GGS is setting up an international school in Thailand as a joint venture with Mae Fah Luang Foundation to mark the King of Thailand's golden jubilee this year.

The new campus will be set in the beautiful hill country of Chiang Rai province, in the far north of Thailand.

Geelong Grammar International (GGI) Foundation chief executive Sandy Mackenzie says the new school will admit students of any race, national and ethnic origin and religious faith.

'It will provide scholarships and other forms of financial assistance . . .' In keeping with its international charter, no more than 25 per cent of enrolment will be of same nationality.

The school, which will offer year 9 to 13 schooling, will open in late 1998. The curriculum will include the International Baccalaureate, and a Year 13 pre-university foundation studies programme.

The school made a bid to attract young Hong Kong students when it took part in the 8th Australian Secondary School Exhibition, held last week at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Mr Mackenzie and representatives of 19 other Australian secondary schools were in Hong Kong for the exhibition.

One of the organisers, Evelyn Fyfe, managing director of the Australian Education Consultancy Ltd, said that Australia is the most popular study destination for Hong Kong students as it offers English language education of a world standard at competitive costs.
