Where was Game of Thrones filmed? Cerseis walk of shame, and where Jon Snow and Ygritte made out

July 2024 · 4 minute read

As the final season of Game of Thrones prepares to start on HBO on April 14, we’ve identified the best spots from iconic scenes in previous seasons.

The Iron Throne

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is a must for any Game of Thrones fan – mainly because it is the chosen film location for King’s Landing. The prestigious royal capital of Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms houses the Red Keep castle – which holds the coveted Iron Throne. Everything in Game of Thrones revolves around this seat and who gets to sit on it.

The real-life Red Keep, Fort Lovrijenac, is instantly recognisable. Located west of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, outside the town’s fortified walls, the spectacular fortress sits regally on the edge of a 37-metre high cliff.

The 25-hectare Trsteno Arboretum in Dubrovnik doubles as the gardens of King’s Landing, where our favourite characters have plotted their way to power or their untimely demise. In reality, the Trsteno Arboretum is one of the city’s most celebrated attractions with its sprawling, whimsical flora. It is also one of the oldest Arboretums in the world.

Cersei Lannister’s walk of shame

Any visit to Dubrovnik’s Old Town would be a waste if you did not take a stroll from the Jesuit Monastery. The monastery doubled as the Great Sept of Baelor, most notably shot in Season 5. While there, walk down the infamous Jesuit Staircase, where Cersei made her first steps of atonement homeward.

TripAdvisor’s Viator Tours offers a “Total Game of Thrones” experience every Tuesday at 9.30am. The tour features all Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones highlights, including the Walk of Shame.

The cave where Jon Snow and Ygritte... you know

For those who prefer the geological wonders of the Wildling North, a trip to Iceland is the place to be. Enjoy a romantic getaway with your partner at the mysterious Grjótagjá rift near Lake Myvatn, also known as the Game of Thrones cave. Relax in the lagoon of Myvatn nature baths and enjoy the stunning natural landscape of northern Iceland.

The Travelling Viking offers a Game of Thrones-themed tour, “Myvatn Mystery and Magic”. Who better to take you through Lake Myvatn than the same guides who took the film crew and cast around? The tour operates throughout the year.

Warm up with the Sand Snakes

Consider yourself a renegade? Feel as sexy and sly as Ellaria Sand and visit Alcazar de Sevilla in Spain. The Water Gardens of Dorne – House of Martell – were filmed at the Alcazar palace in Seville.

The royal palace is a Unesco World Heritage Site, and its rich compound contains architectural influences from the Arabic period to the baroque era. Although no Sand Snakes or Martells are resident, the gardens, filled with fruit trees and exotic plants, will make you feel worlds away from the bleak wintry North of the Starks.

Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name – and all the rest

The Breaker of Chains has had a long evolution in Game of Thrones. For one, her title keeps getting longer. But rewinding back to her early days, there is a scene that would have ended it all for Daenerys before she had even got her feet off the ground.

Lokrum Island is 15 minutes from Dubrovnik’s Old Town. In filming, the island doubled as Qarth, the mercantile city state in Essos – across the strait from King’s Landing in Westeros.

Although the island is mostly a verdant oasis, the scene in Season 2 where Daenerys Targaryen visits the trading port was shot in Lokrum Benedictine Monastery of St Mary, rich with 12th century cloisters and Gothic-Renaissance architecture. ‘Poisonous’ wine was reserved for the HBO production, but it was said that the monks of St Mary put a curse on whoever tried to own the island for their own pleasure.

Get really into it

If you would rather not have to book everything yourself, Klook offers the Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour, which guides you through the Lovrijenac Fortress, Trsteno Arboretum and Lokrum Island, not to mention the Legends Evening Walking Tour, where diehard fans can learn more about the venue and little-known facts about the show. Seafarers can try a cruise and walking tour aboard Daenerys Targaryen’s ship on the Adriatic Sea. Staff on board are dressed like the main characters in the show, while you sip on ‘Dragon Blood’ cocktails.
